shade from the tree had sheltered me
when i should have been growing
there underneath on earth so sweet, so soft
perfect for sleeping

i felt the summer sun kiss my skin
rekindle the hungry flame within
and through the light of that transcendent fire
strode my desire

fruit from that tree had nourished me
while i thought i was learning how to provide,
how to survive regardless of the yearning

i let the cold autumn rain soak my skin
to satiate the gnawing thirst within
and when i knew that i had had my fill
i met my will

i stand up. ready to be counted
i stand up. prepared to sing
i stand up
i set my sight to the top of the mountain
when i stand up i unfold my wings

crow in the tree, she scolded me
about my small perspective
for she has flown above all that i have known
below what i've neglected
when i heard the warm spring wind call my name
i arose to face the change
no more use for the old way
i found my strength
