Artist and teacher Sloan Wainwright comes from a long line of amazingly gifted singer/songwriters. Her family tree (brother Loudon, nephew Rufus, niece Martha) reads like a who's who of contemporary popular music. Sloan's incredible gift is not only her unique songwriting ability but also her smoky, deep voiced rendition of songs. Her musical style melds the best of pop, folk and jazz to create a soulful hybrid.
In addition to her accomplishments as a recording artist Sloan has developed her own Vocal Workshop lesson plan. In the Vocal Workshop Sloan shares her experience as a singer, songwriter and performer. Together, Sloan and her students explore the discovery of music and self-expression through the voice.
The three-hour Vocal Workshop covers essential information concerning basic vocal technique. The lesson plan includes maintaining and optimizing breath control, accessing tone and resonance, the balance between control and flexibility and the value of repeated and regular vocal workouts.
Sloan's primary focus is the strengthening of the voice. This is a whole body approach using a combination of discussion, relaxation, movement, breath work, sound and technique. Students participate in vocal warm-ups and workouts and they have fun in the process! At the end of the session Sloan works with students to develop their personal and daily singing regimen.
The Sloan Wainwright Vocal Workshop is a wonderful learning experience for singers and non-singers alike.
Sloan can be found teaching her Vocal Workshop at various locations throughout the year. Some are afternoon classrooms prior to an evening performance others are formal Song Camps. Fans of Sloan's music are encouraged to host a Vocal Workshop in their home, church or on-site at their favorite folk music venue. There's a bit of legwork involved, as the host you will need a minimum of 15 students for it to work, but the experience has consistently proven to be worth the effort.
